Why two quotes for the same head differ by 3,000 USD

Turkish clinics sell packages, not grafts, and a package is a bundle of very different things. The cheapest offers in the market cover the operation, a shared transfer, one night in a modest hotel and a basic care kit, with a technician team doing extraction and placement under a surgeon who signs the file. At the upper end you are paying for a surgeon who performs the incisions personally, a smaller daily patient list, sedation, longer follow-up and a hotel you would book anyway. Both are legal, both are common, and the price gap is mostly staffing and volume rather than equipment.

This is also why a graft count alone never explains a quote. A clinic that operates on eight patients a day can amortise its rent and its team across those eight files; a surgeon-led centre taking two patients cannot. When you compare offers, compare the staffing model first and the number second.

What the graft count in your quote really means

Ask how the graft number was reached. A responsible plan starts from donor density and the size of the recipient area, then sets a target density — commonly 35 to 45 follicular units per square centimetre in the front third, less behind it. If a clinic quotes 5,000 grafts from a photograph without measuring donor density, the number is a sales figure. Very few donor areas support 5,000 quality grafts in one day, and over-harvesting to hit a promised number is one of the main causes of a visibly thinned donor two years later.

Watch the unit as well. Grafts are follicular units and each contains one to four hairs, so 3,000 grafts may be 6,000 or 7,500 hairs. Some quotes quietly switch to hair count to make the package look larger.

Currency, deposits and payment order

Most Turkish clinics quote in euros or US dollars even for domestic patients, because the exchange rate moves faster than their price list. Deposits of 100 to 300 USD are normal to hold a date; anything close to full prepayment before you have seen the facility is not. Confirm in writing whether the balance is payable in cash on arrival, by card with a surcharge, or by transfer, because a card surcharge of three to four percent on a 3,500 USD package is real money.

Also confirm what happens if the surgeon reduces the graft count on the day after examining you. In a fair contract the price falls with the plan; in a bad one the package price is fixed regardless of what is actually implanted.

The cost of the things that go wrong

Budget beyond the operation. A second session, if your loss progresses or the first plan was conservative, typically costs the same again and cannot happen sooner than eight to twelve months. Medication is a recurring cost if you take finasteride or minoxidil to protect native hair. Corrective work on a poorly designed hairline is more expensive than the original procedure because grafts have to be removed or camouflaged before new ones are placed.

The cheapest way to control these costs is not to negotiate harder. It is to choose a plan you can still afford to extend, keep photographs of every stage, and get every promise — graft count, technique, who operates, what is included — in a written message you can refer back to.
