How many grafts do you need?

Graft count is the single biggest driver of what a hair transplant in Turkey costs — and the number clinics vary most in their quotes. Use the calculator below to get the realistic bracket for your Norwood stage, then compare it against every offer you receive.

Usually one FUE or DHI session gives a natural hairline.

How the estimate is built

The ranges follow standard planning practice in Turkish clinics: coverage area in square centimetres multiplied by a target density of 40-55 grafts/cm² for Sapphire FUE and 50-70 grafts/cm² for DHI. Hairline work carries the highest density, the mid-scalp slightly less and the crown least, because a whorl needs direction more than volume.

Donor capacity is the limit that no technique changes. A typical patient has 5,000-8,000 lifetime grafts available across the occipital and temporal donor zones. Planning a first session that uses most of it leaves nothing for the loss that continues over the next decade, which is why good surgeons hold reserve back rather than maximising a single operation.

Use the number as a checking tool

Take your range into every consultation. If one clinic quotes 2,200 grafts and another 4,500 for the same photographs, at least one of them is not planning around your donor area. Ask each clinic to justify the count in writing, with the coverage area and target density they used.

FAQ

How many grafts do I need for a hair transplant?

Most Norwood 3 patients need 1,800-2,500 grafts, Norwood 4 around 2,500-3,500 and Norwood 5-6 between 3,500 and 5,500. Your donor density sets the real ceiling, so the number in any quote should follow an assessment of your donor area, not a package price.

Is a higher graft count always better?

No. Over-harvesting thins the donor area permanently and can lower graft survival. A clinic that offers thousands of extra grafts without examining your donor zone is selling volume, not a plan.

How many hairs is one graft?

A graft is a follicular unit containing one to four hairs, averaging around 2.2. So 3,000 grafts is roughly 6,500-7,000 hairs, which is why graft counts and hair counts should never be quoted interchangeably.

Can the calculator replace a consultation?

It gives you the bracket to sanity-check clinic quotes. Only a photo or in-person assessment of your donor density, hair calibre and loss pattern can confirm the final number.

Understanding your graft estimate

What the graft estimate is doing, and what it is not

The calculator maps your Norwood stage and the area you want covered onto the density figures clinics plan around, roughly forty to fifty follicular units per square centimetre for a natural adult result and slightly less on the crown. It gives you a range so you can sanity-check a quote before you pay a deposit. It cannot see your donor area, your hair calibre, your scalp laxity or your family pattern, all of which move the real number. Treat it as the figure you carry into a consultation, not as a surgical plan.

Why donor supply, not desire, sets the ceiling

A typical safe donor zone yields somewhere between five and seven thousand grafts across a lifetime, and every one taken is gone permanently. That is the constraint behind every sensible surgical plan. A clinic that agrees to harvest six thousand grafts in one sitting for an early-stage patient is spending a budget that patient will need in his fifties. If your estimate here comes out far below the number a clinic quotes, the difference is worth an explicit conversation: ask what density they are planning, over what area, and what they are reserving for future loss.

How the number translates into price and session length

Turkish clinics price in packages rather than per graft, but the graft count still drives which band you land in and how long you sit in the chair. Two thousand grafts is a comfortable single session of five to six hours. Four thousand is eight to ten hours and usually means a larger technician team working in parallel, which is exactly when you should ask how many of them will be on your case. Above roughly forty-five hundred, a careful clinic will often propose splitting the work across two sessions a year apart rather than pushing the donor area in one day.

What to bring to the consultation after using this tool

Photograph your scalp in daylight from five angles, note when the loss started and how fast it has moved, and list any finasteride, minoxidil or other treatment you have used and for how long. Bring the graft range from this page and ask the clinic to explain any large deviation from it. If two clinics quote numbers that differ by more than a thousand grafts for the same photographs, one of them is planning a different density or a different area, and it is entirely reasonable to ask which.
