When reviewing a quote or consent form from a Turkish hair transplant clinic, you might still encounter the term "FUT" or "strip surgery" as a historical reference, though it is far less commonly offered or recommended today compared to FUE. This method involves surgically removing a linear strip of skin, typically from the back or sides of the head, an area known as the donor zone. This excised strip, usually 1 to 1.5 cm wide and varying in length, is then meticulously dissected under high-powered microscopes by a skilled team into individual follicular units, which are naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs. These follicular units are then prepared for implantation into the balding or thinning areas of the scalp, similar to the final stage of an FUE procedure.
The primary way FUT is measured, both in terms of extraction and subsequent implantation, is by the number of follicular units (or grafts). While the initial strip itself has dimensions (length and width), the clinic's success and your quoted cost will ultimately revolve around the total number of viable grafts extracted from that strip and then transplanted. A single FUT session can yield a significant number of grafts, often ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 or even more, depending on donor density and scalp laxity. This capacity to harvest a large number of grafts in one go was a major advantage of FUT, especially for patients with extensive hair loss, allowing for substantial coverage in a single session.
For a patient, understanding FUT matters primarily due to its distinct post-operative characteristics and potential complications, which contrast sharply with FUE. The most notable aspect is the linear scar that remains in the donor area where the strip was removed. While skilled surgeons aim for a fine, inconspicuous scar, its visibility depends on individual healing, scar formation, and hair length; it can be noticeable if hair is cut very short. This scar is a permanent reminder of the procedure and a key reason why many patients and clinics in Turkey now prefer FUE. However, FUT also allowed for preserving more of the donor area for future sessions, as hair around the excised strip remained largely untouched, unlike FUE which creates tiny punch scars spread across the donor area.
Realistically, the recovery timeline for FUT involves a few days of tenderness and discomfort in the donor area, potentially more than FUE due to the incision. Sutures or staples are typically removed around 10-14 days post-op. The transplanted hairs follow the same cycle as FUE, shedding within 2-4 weeks, with new growth appearing around 3-4 months and final results maturing at 12-18 months. While clinics often promise a "virtually invisible" scar, patients should prepare for a potentially visible line if they prefer very short hairstyles. The immediate donor area after surgery might have some swelling and bruising, which usually subsides within a week.
Common issues that can arise with FUT include wider or stretched scars, keloid or hypertrophic scarring in prone individuals, nerve damage leading to numbness or altered sensation in parts of the donor scalp, and transection of grafts during the strip dissection if handled by less experienced technicians. In rare cases, poor wound healing can occur. While the graft survival rate for properly dissected grafts is generally very high, the main concerns revolve around the donor area's aesthetics and sensation. The skill of the surgical team in both removing the strip and meticulously dissecting the grafts is paramount to a good outcome.
When considering FUT, although less common today, a patient should ask several critical questions. Inquire about the surgeon's and clinic's experience specifically with FUT, including how many such procedures they perform annually. Ask to see before-and-after photos that clearly show the donor area of previous FUT patients, paying close attention to scar visibility. Discuss scar management techniques and what options might exist if the scar becomes prominent. It's crucial to clarify who will be dissecting the grafts – ideally, experienced technicians working under high magnification. Also, discuss expectations regarding donor area sensation post-surgery, as altered feeling is a known possibility. Ensure you understand the potential impact on future hairstyles and if you are comfortable with the permanent linear scar.
