Measuring coverage rate is not a precise scientific calculation in the same way one might measure blood pressure; rather, it’s often a subjective assessment informed by objective data. Clinics typically consider factors such as the number of grafts transplanted, the average density of hair per square centimeter in both donor and recipient areas, and the caliber (thickness) and color of individual hair shafts. Finer, lighter hairs naturally offer less coverage than thicker, darker ones, even at the same density. A specialist might use a dermatoscope to count hairs per square centimeter in a small, representative area, then extrapolate that across the entire transplanted region. Inquire about the projected graft count for your specific case and how the surgeon plans to distribute these grafts to maximize visual impact, not just numerical density.
